The History
Our historic pub, located in the market town of Berkhamsted, dates back to some time before 1535. A time in history that would have seen Henry VIII as the ruling monarch, Anne Boleyn his Queen and a two-year-old Elizabeth I. Unfortunately, a more exact date for the listed building is unknown, but it is the oldest existing pub to remain in the town.
Our cellar is reportedly haunted by two mischievous boys, who like to grab your ankles and trip you on the stairs! Recently ‘Ant & Dec’ (as we have christened them) have been busy turning off the gas in the cellar, mid-service.
